Always looking for the story underneath.

I'm James Coulson, an Emmy Award-winning Creative Director and Designer based in New York.

I've always been interested in how ideas become stories people can understand. I came up through brand and design, creating and directing major rebrands and identity systems. That taught me to think in systems: how a central idea can shape an identity, create a visual language and stay coherent wherever it appears.

The challenge is rarely a lack of ideas. More often, the ideas are complex, technical or buried in internal language. Whether I'm working on a brand, a product or a film, I'm usually solving the same problem: translating ideas into stories people can understand.

That can mean launching a brand or explaining enterprise software. What matters internally doesn't always arrive in a form an audience connects with. My role is to find the human story inside an idea and express it visually. Not dumbed down, distilled.

My work spans brand strategy and design across print, digital, motion and film. I can develop the idea, design and make the work myself, or direct specialist teams across live action, animation, CG and VFX when a project needs to scale.

I've led creative teams throughout my career, including at NBCUniversal and Viewpoint Creative, and established and led the creative studio at Nice Shoes.

Today, I lead Cogent, my direct-to-brand creative practice focused on product and brand storytelling.

Over the course of my career, I've worked with brands including Anthropic, BMW, DoorDash, HBO, IBM, NBCUniversal, Reebok, Rockefeller Capital Management, Samsung, Showtime and Verizon.

My work has received Emmy, Clio, Promax and New York Festivals awards, with recognition from AIGA, Motionographer and Stash.

I also teach filmmaking at the School of Visual Arts in New York, mentoring students as they find their voice and develop their thesis films.

Outside client work, I created Other America, a series of twelve short documentaries for which I travelled 14,000 miles across the United States. The project was screened at Nitehawk Cinema and featured by The Guardian and BBC America.

I studied visual communication at Ravensbourne in London, including an Erasmus exchange at Design Academy Eindhoven, before completing postgraduate study at the Jan van Eyck Academy in the Netherlands.

Based in New York. Working with clients worldwide.
