View to the future: Graphic design to-day and to-morrow

Role Writer + Designer

I was invited to interview, write a critique and design an article on one on my design heroes, Wim Crouwel. As one of the most influential Dutch Modernists, Crouwel’s contribution to Graphic Design is one of the disciplines most important.

I was both fortunate to gain full access to his private archive at the Stedelijk Museum and meet the legend in his home in Amsterdam.

My main thesis and critique of Crouwel was his adoption of the Modernist credo ‘form follows function’. In my article, ‘The voice of certainty, the breath of longing’, I analyze this belief in relation to his work in the context of post-modernism and expose the contradictory statement.

The forward for the book was written by Robin Kinross. The book was published by De Balie, Amsterdam and distributed globally by Idea Books, Amsterdam.
